NORTH KOREANS MAKE USS PUEBLO A TOURIST ATTRACTION SEOUL, Korea - The famed American spy ship, USS Pueblo, was captured by North Korea in 1968 and almost triggered another Korean War. It will now be "displayed" beside a bridge on the Taedong River, according to officials of the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions who recently visited the North Korean capital for soccer matches between workers of the two Koreas. The Taedong river runs through Pyongyang, reports Kim Ji-ho Staff reporter for the Korea Herald. North Korea began displaying the spy ship, regarded by the government as a "sacred monument of victory over the US imperialists," as a tourist attraction in 1995. N. Korea Turns US Spy Ship Into Tourist Attraction
"As for as I know the North Koreans have been showing the ship to Japanese tourists since August,'' Oe said. ``They tell tourists it's the Pueblo.'' The capture of the Pueblo and its crew by North Korean patrol boats off Wonsan in January 1968 held the administration of then-U.S. President Lyndon Johnson at bay for months. ``It sure looks like the Pueblo,'' said a U.S. embassy naval attache in Tokyo who saw the photograph. |
